This week I have been outraged from the tragic news that Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ will be cutting their men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams at the end of the current school year. This is an outrage because they have been four of the schools stronger programs for years and now they are cutting the teams to add a women’s golf program. The Athletic Director is saying it will help maximize funds and help them meet Title IX and NCAA standards. I graduated from the high school that was from this university and I also ran track so this is hitting me deep. Not to mention many of my friends that will now have to transfer due to this sudden decision.

I don’t think it is right not one bit. I have always known of this program and they have always been a bright part of track & field on the east coast. Starting form their legendary coach John Moon. Coach Moon not at SHU is like Canada without Hockey. I just hope something can be done to help or possibly save the program.

University suspends fraternity after three alcohol poisoning incidents at recent off campus party.

This past weekend, three students were admitted to the local hospital for alcohol poisoning. All members of the campus fraternity Alpha Beta Zeta. Junior Press Martin, Sophomore Rob Smith, and Freshman Al Amalek all under the legal drinking age. Martin and Smith were released while Almalek is still in the hospital listed in critical condition.

The university released the statement “Our initial investigation indicates that these young men were at a party in the ABZ house. A number of witnesses say alcohol was being consumed by them. Based on that we are suspending the fraternity and all its activities on campus. We have not decided how long the suspension will last.”

Two weeks ago, in an effort to reduce the drinking at fraternity parties, University president Harvey Smithville restates the alcohol policy: “Any fraternity in which the members have alcohol will be immediately suspended. A second offense within a year will result in the banning of that fraternity for five years.”

Interfraternity Council president Bart Addison said, “I am shocked that this incident occurred. I believed that everyone was adhering to the University’s policy. However, I do not believe that the entire fraternity should be held responsible for the actions of a few. I am going to ask President Smithville to reconsider his suspension of the ABZ’s.”

Jan Mize in the university’s public relation department released that usually suspensions like this are for about a year.

The university might increase its police patrols of fraternity houses on the weekends to prevent such an event from happening.

The biggest thing that caught my attention this week was the Tiger Wood’s apology. The media has taken a situation of private matter and placed it in the public eye. This apology was one of the most infamous apologies in most recent history behind President Clinton’s and Kobe Bryant’s. The world seemed to turn their backs on Tiger because of his choice of infidelity. It is his personal issues but yet the media is yet again right in the middle of it all. After a few months in therapy and avoidance of the media Tiger comes out with a press conference to speak his peace and tell his plans of the near future.

The entire apology.

Protest

Angry citizens to protest against University for biology class teaching evolution.

Wilbur Straking, pastor of the Ever-Faithful Church of the Living Water, said he would lead a group of 25 Christians  to the state capital next Monday to speak with legislators. Straking said, “We believe the teaching of evolution is against the principles of this Christian country and to put a stop to it.” Associate professor of biology Laura Cliff chose not to comment on this matter along with the university president.

Quotation 1

Martin Glodsmith, general manager of the local public radio station, said that the station’s goal is to raise $100,000 for programming efforts. Goldsmith said that $130,000 is spent each year on buying programs. This is the best way to help the station pay for the programming.

Quotation 2

Marilyn Wall, president of the Walls Tire Co., said this year orders were up about 20 percent and were able to recall employees that were laid off the past three years. Wall said they were able to expand the work force by adding 20 new jobs.

Quotation 3

Marsha Moss, director of the local symphony orchestra, said the response of the audience to last night’s concert was gratifying. Moss said playing in front of an audience like that is more fun than playing in front of critics and it’s good to know that people appreciate the hours of hard work the orchestra puts into to each concert.

Quotation 4

Jerry Butts, member of the city council, said we could either grant the police the raise their union requested then raise the property tax to pay for it. Butts said we could deny the request for a pay raise and kept the tax rates the same they have been for five years.

A gloomy day with people covered with mud. Young boy lost and searching for someone or something. The boy glares motionless as if he is unsure of his next move. He stares with no emotions as if he is in fact dead to the world. Lost and confused this young child is all alone with out any idea of what is next. Where is his family? Will he see them again? Is he really all alone? He sits with a pondered look of uncertainty about everything that has just occurred.

In the distance another figure sits also covered in mud motionlessly. Who might the figure be? It is too far to make out any description. Unsure of the well being; dead or alive, wounded or in good condition. It is hard to see if it is even a man or woman.

What ever occurred seemed like something tragic to this place. Only time can tell what will happen for this young boy and who ever may be around him.

Snowpocalypse

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

I found this Video from the AP on youtube that made me laugh. It shows what the wonderful people of DC did once the snow finally stopped. They interview different people who were inDC on Dupoint Circle having fun in the snow.

This was definitely a different type of story to air. it was unique an showed a lighter side of the blizzard since it wasn’t much light side for us that week. they did a great job of just showing the fun people got to have through all the snow.

I will use the story “Jury Recommends Death for 69-Year-Old Grandmother” to answer the following questions.

1. The news value of this story are a 69-year-old woman could possibly be sentenced to death row which would make her the oldest woman on Missouri’s death row.

2. The who of this story would be Faye Copeland. The what would be Copeland recommended to death row by jury. The when is last year according to the story. The where would be Chillicothe, Missouri.  The why would be she is recommended for death because she was on trial for the murders or four transient farm workers whose bodies were found.  The how of the story would be on the fifth conviction the jury recommended the sentence of death after there three hour long deliberation.

3. The sources this story use are records. The story was probably written according to the records of the courthouse.

4. Since this story used records from the court room, the reporter had access to what occurred during the trial.
