This week I have been outraged from the tragic news that Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ will be cutting their men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams at the end of the current school year. This is an outrage because they have been four of the schools stronger programs for years and now they are cutting the teams to add a women’s golf program. The Athletic Director is saying it will help maximize funds and help them meet Title IX and NCAA standards. I graduated from the high school that was from this university and I also ran track so this is hitting me deep. Not to mention many of my friends that will now have to transfer due to this sudden decision.

I don’t think it is right not one bit. I have always known of this program and they have always been a bright part of track & field on the east coast. Starting form their legendary coach John Moon. Coach Moon not at SHU is like Canada without Hockey. I just hope something can be done to help or possibly save the program.

Sorry to hear that their track teams are being cut. At least in my opinion, soccer > golf, times about 89723489327 million. So that seems a little ridiculous to me. But hey, maybe your friends will transfer to Mason and make our track program even better! 🙂

I’m confused by this. They’re getting rid of track but adding golf? I mean, I understand why they need golf to meet requirements but does track not count?
I also would be interested to know the stats of how money is lost in the long run when kids transfer and some won’t even apply there anymore. Track cost a million dollars every year, so if you subtract the tutition lost and the amount of revenue lost from the popularity of track I wonder if in the long run it was a wise decision. I would like to see if there is a change in the amount of applicants in the upcoming years.
Also, I think they way they handled not telling the coach until it happened was wrong. He should have been kept in the loop. If for no other reason but to be financially prepared. I’m sure they gave him some sort of severence package but for someone who has been loyal to their school for many years, they should have done more for him.

I actually have a friend that goes to Seton Hall and I asked him about it and he was upset that the school tried little to no effort to save the program. Cutting two major programs that contribute to a school just to add one program for profit is wrong. How can you not even tell the coach until it happened is unprofessional. Its seams like Seton Hall has no regard for respect of students and teachers, its just to sad.

It really was unprofessional from the school stand point. I am unsure what the athletes are going to do. I am not sure how golf will bring in more revenue than the Track team but that is there decision. And to clarify they dropped Four programs just for one. Mens indoor and outdoor track and womens indoor and outdoor. They are all the same teams but they each count as their own program.

sn- Kimmy I’ve definitely talked to some of them and hopefully they look into Mason
